2009 Gold Coast Splash
The 2009 Gold Coast Splash went off with a splash on Saturday 24 January 2009. A group of 10 vessels gathered at the Gold Coast City Marina (GCCM) for a weekend of fun on the high seas to raise money for the special kids of Queensland - because not every child’s life is plain sailing.
The crew departed the GCCM inbound to the picturesque island destination “DUX” on South Stradbroke Island for three days of sun, fun, sand and skulduggery. After the event was released the procession made its way down the Coomera River bound for the Southport Yacht Club grounds. The adventure was filled with days of fantastic food, entertainment and many water and onshore activities including beach cricket, small boats regatta, dingy race and sea golf.
On Australia Day the boats proudly flew the “Flag’ as presentations were handed out. The Spirit of the Splash went to a very popular boat the 1949 Norman Wright named Waiban, captained by Ed Barker who says he has grown gills on this event having spent more time in the water than he thought he would.
The Variety Splash involves a diverse group of people who at the end today and are simply like-minded individuals looking to do their piece for a worthy cause! Thank you to all of you who attended and special thanks goes to the Southport Yacht Club and the VMR.
